Technical Glossary

Abbe Error

The measurement error introduced when the measuring axis is not collinear with the axis being measured, resulting in angular magnification.

GD&T

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing: A symbolic language used to define the allowable variation of form and size.

Traceability

Validation chain linking measurements to national/international standards through an unbroken chain of comparisons.

Uncertainty (U95)

The statistical parameter characterizing the dispersion of values that could reasonably be attributed to the measurand.

Cylindricity

A condition of a surface of revolution in which all points of the surface are equidistant from a common axis.

Gage R&R

Analysis tool used to evaluate a measurement system's Repeatability and Reproducibility.

Point Cloud

A collection of data points in a 3D coordinate system, representing the external surface of an object.

Cosine Error

The measurement error resulting from the measuring instrument being positioned at an angle to the intended direction.

Parallax

The apparent displacement of an object as seen from two different points not on a straight line with the object.

Thermal Drift

Change in physical dimension due to temperature fluctuations (Calculated as ΔL = αLΔT).

VDA 5 vs MSA Core Tools (AIAG)

The distinction between the German Automotive Association (VDA) approach to measurement system capability versus the standard North American AIAG MSA methodologies.

ISO 10360-2

Verification of CMM length measurement error (E_L,MPE). Uses calibrated step gages or gauge blocks.

AS9102 (FAI)

Aerospace First Article Inspection. Requires validation of every design characteristic on the first production part.

ISO/IEC 17025

General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories across all disciplines.

ASME Y14.5

The US standard for GD&T. Covers symbols, definitions, and rules for geometric tolerancing logic.

ISO 14253-1

The "Decision Rule" standard: How to handle uncertainty when deciding conformity with specifications.

Global automotive quality management standard. Mandates MSA and continuous improvement protocols.

Coordinate Geometry

Fundamental 3-2-1 Alignment

The 3-2-1 principle is the cornerstone of CMM metrology. It mathematically constrains the 6 degrees of freedom (3 translations, 3 rotations) of any rigid body. 3 points define the Primary Plane (locks Z trans and X/Y rot), 2 points define the Secondary Line (locks Y trans and Z rot), and 1 point defines the Tertiary Origin (locks X trans).

Iterative Alignment

Used for complex organic surfaces (car bodies, turbine blades) where no clear planes or lines exist.

RPS (Reference Point System)

Volkswagen standard alignment using specific coordinates to lock individual axes independently.

Best Fit (Least Squares)

Mathematical optimization to minimize the sum of squared deviations across a data set.

Polar (R, θ, Z)

Ideal for circular parts. Defines points by Radius and Angle rather than X/Y distances.

Vector Normal (i, j, k)

The direction perpendicular to a surface at a specific point, essential for probe compensation.

6DoF

The total freedom of movement in 3D space: Tx, Ty, Tz, Rx, Ry, Rz.

3D Distance

The straight-line length between two points: √[(x2-x1)² + (y2-y1)² + (z2-z1)²].

Nominal vs Actual

The delta between the design CAD (Nominal) and the physical part (Actual).

Projection Plane

Projecting a 3D feature onto a 2D plane to measure flat characteristics like hole patterns.

Cross Product (A × B)

Vector math used to calculate a third vector perpendicular to two known vectors.
